Your undertone is the underlying colors on the obvious skin shade. Warm undertones are skin with traces of red, gold, and orange and their skin. This type of skin usually becomes darker ones exposed under the sun. They never burn but they do become more reddish. Individuals with neutral undertones are those with an equal ratio of warm and cool undertones in their skin. They will get darker once exposed under the sun and they may burn sometimes. The last category is the cool undertones. This is the presence of shades like pink or blue in the skin. The individuals with cool undertones are the ones that immediately get sunburned under the sun.

Swatching

Swatching is the common practice of applying a small amount of the product on your skin to check what actually matches. Some individuals swatch the product on the back of their hands and that is a grave mistake because it doesn’t account for the fact that your hand may be a different shade from your face.

What you need to do is to swatch the foundation choices on your cheek and on your neck. Allow this to dry and wait for a few minutes. The waiting time is to credit the adjustment period of the foundation to your skin. Some foundations actually oxidize and get darker over a few minutes in order to adjust to the oils in your skin.

Look For Proper Lighting

If you have noticed that you are in a dimly lit room, you might want to go to a window and stand under direct natural light. Avoid some fluorescent light and observe the performance of the foundation under natural sunlight. If it is too light on you, you will notice that you look ashy or pale. If it is too dark, you will look muddy. The perfect foundation shade will seamlessly disappear into your skin and it should be difficult to tell where the foundation ends and the skin begins.
